Chicago, IL -- "The news that more Americans filed for unemployment benefits this week and that unemployment claims remain near a seven-year high is another urgent reminder of how badly American workers need a change from the disastrous economic policies of the last eight years.

"We are deeply concerned about our nation's economic outlook and will support measures that improve the outlook for American families. This economic crisis has its roots in the housing market and the most effective stimulus will be to reverse the cycle of foreclosure, neighborhood blight, and falling housing values. The American Homeownership Resurgence Plan is the best kind of stimulus.
Atlanta, GA – “Ground zero of today’s economic crisis was irresponsible mortgage lending by government-backed enterprises, most notably Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac,” explains Bob Barr, the Libertarian Party candidate for president. “Yet, Freddie Mac spent extravagantly to prevent Congress from imposing even loose controls over its operations. We need a full and open investigation of Freddie Mac’s lobbying practices, which have cost the taxpayers so much money,” notes Barr.
After several huge, government bailouts, and other measures placing trillions of taxpayer dollars at risk, the nation’s financial system remains far from stable. There is much more work that needs to be done before the economy will return to its growth path, but it cannot be more of the same, heavy-handed government mandates that have failed us time and again.
